FAQ's

Why isn't it loading my image files?

There are are several possible reasons:

  • Most common reason is you are not running it from a website but have made custom names for your files and folders. If you are not planning on running it from a website or do not have a web server that will allow you to use directory indexing rename your image folders "gallery1", "gallery2", "gallery3", etc.. and your images  "image1.jpg", "image2.jpg", "image3.jpg", etc...
  • Your directory structure may be configured incorrectly, refer to the QuickStart section.
  • You do not have directory indexing on, you can either use an .htaccess file inside the "autographer" directory that says:

      Options +Indexes

download our sample by clicking here (remember you need to add a "." at the beginning of the file name once it's up on your server using FTP), if that does not work you can ask your HOST provider to turn the feature on.

  • Have place files in sub-sub folders.
  • If using PWS, you are browsing your local path verse your external resolved url or IP for example "file:///library/web server/autographer.html" verses "http://63.24.11.25/autographer.html".
  • jpegs are processed with progressive scan.

Why do some of my images not load as fast as others?

Autographer is a web-based tool. You need to follow the same processes you would when you are formatting images for your web pages. Use standard optimization settings, use standard DPI settings, etc. If you need assistance on how to format your images correctly please contact us. Other factors that effect the speed of loading image are bandwidth to and from your server and type of browser someone is using. If you review the example videos you will note that Autographer can load images as fast as you can get them.

Why would I want my license embedded?

Currently the "demo" mode of the application relies on authentication from our server. If you have a unique port for your http access or can not reach our server for whatever reason the application in "demo" mode will cease to function. With an embedded license this is not the case.

The slide transitions are not as smooth on my site why is that?

Make sure that you do not have other Flash elements on your page. Some Flash can effect and slow down other Flash elements on the page. Try to keep the page you are displaying from having a lot of Javascript, animation, or other Flash for best performance.

Are there ways to hide the location of my files?

Different users have tried different techniques. As a registered user you can choose any name for your master directories so that other users can not readily find your assets, in addition we have seen many users call their SWF files up directly in a popup window instead of using an html page. Directly linking to the Flash file also seems to helps deter other users from knowing the location of the assets. Please contact us if you would like to know of other ways of hiding the paths to your assets or creating custom paths for each asset.

I put 1000+ images in one gallery and now it runs slow, why?

Autographer is industrial strength but most end-users are not equipped to deal with the unlimited capacity. Keep in mind that how ever many kilobytes you put in a folder the end-user must load as well. We suggest limiting each gallery to a few hundred images at most and optimizing your images for web just like you would on your website.

I have hundreds of portfolio's and I do not want to make a copy of the application in every single portfolio what are my options?

As a registered user you can simply have one copy of the application and then multiple portfolio directories such as the following:

Each portfolio can be called by a different html page (example "portfolio page 1.html" loads autographer.swf but calls for "portfolio1" to load... and yes this works on MACs as well.

Are you ever going to make it compatible with image management programs such as iPhoto?

We have consider this option but most iPhoto users have extremely high resolution photos which are not realistically shared through the web.

Can I change the autographer.html file to index.html?

Yes, as long as your autographer directory is in the same directory your autographer.swf file is in.

How is this program better then others out there?

THIS IS FOR WEBSITES

The technical answer is the application is self contained, there are no external resources or scripting languages needed to support it, NO PHP, NO PERL, NO ASP, NO CF, NO JAVA, nothing. You don't need a different version for a different type of server.

Clarifications:

NetActive mode, the ability to custom name your folders or files, requires that your server is able to do directory indexing, which is covered in our documentation.

Do not try to run on your desktop or locally, it will not work.

Most common errors:

You encoded your JPEGs with progressive scan.

It is working but you're not clearing your browser's cache when testing.

You have an old version of the Flash plug-in, download the new plug-in here.
